Our analysis of the Prelim question papers of recent years shows that most questions relate to current developments in the areas indicated in the syllabus. Thus, even in a so-called static subject like Indian History, the question is often related to recent discovery of an Indus Valley site or an archaeological find which adds to, or sometimes overturns, our understanding of our past. These recent events are reported in the press and journals. It may take decades for these to find a place in the established text books. This emphasises the importance of newspapers and journals in our preparation for the CS Examinations.
